Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mahmoud al-Zahar on Sunday urged European Union not to stop funding the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).

Zahar made the appeal ahead of a meeting of Ministers of the 25-member bloc scheduled for Monday which should approve the decision of the Executive Committee of the EU to stop financial aid to the PNA since the new government led by Hamas has refused to renounce violence, recognize the right of Israel to exist and accept the agreements signed with Israel.

Urging the EU to respect the democratic choice of the Palestinian people who gave Hamas a landslide victory in parliamentary elections on January 25, Zahar said in a written statement that the cessation of aid to the PNA could “certainly bring severe damage to the Palestinian people”.
