China urges Japan to remove barriers to bilateral relations
Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing on Tuesday urged the Japanese government to remove political obstacles to improving and developing relations between the two countries.
At a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Taro Aso, Li said that understanding and correct treatment of the unfortunate period of history constituted an important political basis for the resumption and development of bilateral relations after the war .
He stressed that Japanese leaders’ insistence on their willingness to pay homage to the Yasukuni Shrine which honors Japanese criminals guilty of crimes of war had seriously hurt the feelings of Chinese people and undermined the political basis for bilateral relations .
“It is imperative to remove such obstacles to improving and developing bilateral relations,” Li said.
This meeting took place on the sidelines of the 5th Ministerial Meeting of Cooperation Dialogue Asia, held on 23 and 24 May in the Qatari capital.
Mr Li said the Chinese government attached great importance to developing Sino-Japanese and was ready to promote relations of good neighborliness and cooperation with Japan on the basis of lessons from history and perspectives.
Recalling the Chinese government’s consistent snuff and develop bilateral relations, political set forth by Chinese President Hu Jintao during a meeting with a group of Japanese guests representing seven associations for the Japan-China Friendship March 31 Mr. Li noted that at present political relations between China and Japan were facing serious difficulties, which was not in the interests of the peoples of the two countries nor in line with the aspirations of the international community.

He said the Japanese government had reflected on the remarks made by President Hu March 31 and hoped that both sides will seize the real meaning of these remarks on holding more dialogues and exchanges and strengthening understanding to improve and develop bilateral relations.
During the meeting, both parties were unanimous in believing that the Sino-Japanese relations were of the utmost importance for both parties.
The two heads of diplomacy have also agreed that it was important to strengthen the strategic dialogue between the two countries and work together to break down political barriers, deepen economic and trade cooperation, and of initiate cooperation in the fields of energy conservation and environmental protection and increasing shared interests.
They also agreed it was important to promote exchanges between the two peoples, especially among youth, and continue to engage in security dialogue at vice-minister and military exchanges.
