South Korea and Japan agree to talk about their maritime boundary in the Doha negotiations
South Korea and Japan have agreed to have further negotiations over a disputed maritime border around a set of islands, said an official at the Japanese embassy.
The South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ban Ki-moon and his Japanese counterpart, Taro Aso, reached the agreement at a meeting on the sidelines of the Cooperation Dialogue Asia.
The meeting half an hour took place before the start of the meeting of Asian Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Doha.
negotiations which were suspended since 2000, are scheduled for 12 and June 13 in Tokyo, according to news agency South Korean Yonhap.
South Korea and Japan both claim sovereignty over a series of islands east of the Korean peninsula. These islets controlled by South Korea are called Dokdo by Koreans and Takeshima by Japanese.
In April, relations between the two neighbors have deteriorated when Japan announced a maritime survey near Dokdo despite protests from South Korea. The situation calmed down after two days of negotiations in late April.
