The Secretary General, Kofi Annan, arrived in Hanoi Tuesday for an official visit of three days in Vietnam.

The visit by Mr Annan in Vietnam, the first since taking office in 1997, will help develop relations between the countries and the UN, while the Vietnam apply for a seat on a non-permanent Security Council for 2008 - 2009, said spokesman of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Le Dung.

The two sides will exchange views on United Nations activities, including their role in protecting human rights, management of regional conflicts, efforts to reform and achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

They will also discuss measures to improve the efficiency of cooperation between UN bodies and Vietnam, including the problems of socio-economic, avian flu and HIV / AIDS.

During his visit, Annan will meet with Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Dy Nien, the Secretary General of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Vietnam Nong Duc Manh, President Tran Duc Long and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

After his visit to Vietnam, Mr. Annan will visit Thailand, the last leg of his tour which has already taken in Australia, South Korea, Japan and China.
